Together, we will decide on the best location for your photos. We can shoot in your home as long as your home has adequate natural light. Many clients prefer their home because of the intimate and personal feel it provides, especially for newborn sessions. I have many locations that I love to shoot at regularly but I am always open to new locations as well. You should choose a location that fits your style and personality or that may have a connection to you and your family.

If we are shooting in your home, I prefer late morning, because that is when homes are usually lit up the best. If we are shooting outdoors we will shoot either in the morning or in the evening. The light is typically too harsh mid day. If your children are up for it, shooting one to two hours before sunset provides gorgeous light and atmosphere. The images in my portfolio look the way they do largely because of my use of light and the time of day your session takes place has a huge impact. Many families tell me that they simply have the kids take a late nap or have some down time prior to their evening session.
Wardrobe should be comfortable and reflect who you are. I do not recommend matching but rather coordinating. See my Pinterest board for some what to wear guides that can give you an idea of what I am talking about. I am happy to consult you directly on wardrobe but I am looking more at a family connection than what you are wearing.
Remember that children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Don’t worry if your child is running about and active, I love to capture images of children and toddlers while busy playing and exploring.
To get the family shots, I usually direct the adults to simply “be” with the child, or hold the child and we go from there.
To get the most of your session, make sure that your little one has rested and has had adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snacks and play, however I will probably still shoot during the breaks. Bring dry, not messy snacks so their little faces stay clean during the session.
Prepare children for the session by letting them know that a friend will be taking some photos of them, it’s best not to surprise them.
I will worry about their behavior, you just need to show up prepared to have fun and relax. Make it a fun family experience. Instead of bribing your kiddos with a treat, make this a feeel good day. Make plans to go out for dinner or a tread before or after the session as a family. Not as a reward but as part of the overall experience.
My goal is to capture who your family is right now, not to make you do anything stiff or unnatural. I promise to have some fun. I am a natural light photographer and do not use any fancy lighting or reflectors. My sessions are light hearted and fast. It will be an hour or less for most sessions, but 1 to 2 hours for a newborn session. We can be on location or in the comfort of your home. I am not after a photo with everyone posed looking at the camera. We may get a few of them, but I am more about connection than perfection. I want them to feel gentle, silly and timeless with a little fine art.
I will provide a generous gallery of images that can be displayed in your home as pieces of art or archived in a custom album to be treasured for generations. In two to three weeks after your session, I will send you a link to a gallery of all your images (minimum 75). You are welcome to share your gallery on social media or email it to friends and family. Depending on the session you booked, I will also work on your photo album. You will have your photo album and all photos on a flash drive with in three to four weeks. You do have options to purchase other prints and products through your gallery.
